Painting is a fun way to switch up the design and style of your house with minimal effort. In order to make sure your paint job looks like one from the professionals, follow these 4 easy steps.

Step 1: Clean & Prep

First you need to clean the walls as this is necessary for long lasting quality work. To clean your walls, simply wipe them down with a damp cloth to rid the surface of any dirt or dust. Once cleaned, fill in any holes so the surface is smooth and ready for a fresh coat. Additionally you need to clear out the room you plan to paint. This involves taking everything out of the space (with the exception of large furniture) and laying down plastic tarps or canvas.

Step 2: Prime

Primer is important to create a clean base for your choice of paint color. If you are opting to go lighter than the current paint color, primer will make sure the darker color won’t show through.

Step 3: Cut In / Trim

Before painting the whole wall, you’ll want to cut in or trim the paint area. This involves painting the wall around doors, baseboards, windows, light sockets, etc. To do use, use a paintbrush and make sure to not have an excessive amount of paint on your brush. To keep the crown molding, baseboards, and window ledges free of paint, use masking tape or painters tape. The tape will easily come off and keep paint from seeping down.

Step 4: Paint

Now is the time to paint the walls. In order to get an even covering, paint using the “W” technique. Be cautious of how much paint is on your roller as you don’t want paint dripping down the wall or unwanted textures. A tip to avoid any drippings is to paint from the top down. This way you’ll be able to cover up any mistakes as you go. Attaching an extension pole to your roller will not only save your neck from straining but also give you ample range of motion to reach all parts of the wall with ease.
