Tips for Choosing the Right Storage Unit
Storage units provide much needed extra square footage while you’re in the middle of a move, have extra belongings you need regular access to, or to safely keep family treasures. Here are some tips to help you choose the right unit.
Space
First you’ll need to decide what size is the best option for you. Start with how much space you’ll need. If you only need extra storage for about a bedroom’s worth of items, opt for a smaller unit, such as a 5-by-10-foot space. If you’re moving a whole home or need to store more than a bedroom’s worth opt for a larger unit, such as a 10-by-30-foot.
Location
Next, decide how close you want to be to your storage unit. You might think you won’t need access very much. However, just consider if you want to drive only 10 minutes or over an hour on those occasions when you realize you really do need something in there.
Security
How important is security to you when choosing a storage unit? Depending on what valuable items you’re storing, consider how closely monitored you would like your unit to be.
Climate
Do you have leather furniture, a lot of electronics, or precious old photos and documents to store? It might be best to get a storage unit that is climate controlled in that case. But just think about what you’ll be storing and if that’s a must for you.
Access
Lastly, think about access. Are you ok with a third floor unit? Even with elevators, it might make it slightly more of a hassle to move heavy items in and out. But if you don’t have a lot of heavy items or are only moving those in and out once, you might feel it’s not a huge deal.
